I hate supporting England. It’s like some terrible drug habit. You know it’s harmful, you even try to tell yourself that ‘it’s only a game’. You know that, for all the highs, supporting any England team will almost inevitably lead to depression. So at the beginning of any tournament or series you do the sensible thing: you try not to get your hopes up.
And then England do something really sneaky: they play well. They give you hope. They lure you in, lead you on. They bat well, bowl OK. And then, after four days of domination, they turn round and throw the game away. I should have known!
I know it’s not important in the great scheme of things. I’m not going to let it get to me. I will be strong and kick this habit!
But the third test begins in two week’s time…
