Spent the weekend at Ffald-y-brenin, a retreat centre in west Wales. Great scenery, great solitude and space and the chance to catch up with old friends and make some new ones – like Paul Hobbs, an artist whose website you should definitely check out. I’m always struck, at these places, at the link between physical space and mental space, at the way that the brain seems so much less cluttered and clearer, when the surroundings are less oppressive. The rapidity of our cities and towns, the sheer physical proximity of the buildings make reflection difficult today. So it’s good to get away, just to think for a while.
