The most beautiful footnote

  • by

This, I think, is the most beautiful footnote ever written:

“For the enumeration of the Syrian and Arabian deities, it may be observed, that Milton has comprised in one hundred and thirty very beautiful lines the two large and learned syntagmas which Selden had composed on that abstruse subject.”
Gibbon, Decline & Fall, Chap XV n.9

It sounds so beautiful. I’m not even sure I know what it means… (The OED defines syntagma as ‘A regular or orderly collection of statements, propositions, doctrines, etc; a systematically arranged treatise.’ But what Selden’s list was, and what Milton turned it into I have yet to find out.)
