Leveller’s Day

The Youth Bible is nearly ready to roll – I’ve been working on finalising the text before it goes to print. I think it’s safe to say that it’s the only Bible around that is enthusiastic about civil disobedience.

Talking of which, I went to Leveller’s Day last Saturday, commemorating the Levellers’ revolt, one of the most important, and least remembered, events in British history. The Levellers were a group of political dissidents in the English Civil war led by John Lilburne, an agitator and writer. Among their demands were one-man, one vote, a written constitution and proper accountability from their MPs. Pretty radical for 1649. You can find out more here. Speakers at the event included Tony Benn and Billy Bragg.
