Living deliberately

  • by

Been reading a lot of Thoreau recently. Although he has become a kind of saint of the green movement, that wasn’t really what he was all about. He’s more a saint of the ‘deliberateness’ movement; as he wrote, ‘I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately’. In an era where so many decisions are taken out of our hands, where so many demands are made on us by the state, the idea of living deliberately, of maximising our independence has assumed more relevance than ever.
