The bells have rung, the white smoke has… er… smoked and Pope Benedict XVI has emerged. I’m certainly no expert on Catholic theology, but what I few members of the Catholic heirarchy in recent years have been more divisive. Despite his apparent charm and courtesy, he has gained a reputation for his extreme conservatism and for the efficiency with wh he stamped down on liberation theology. It may have been extremely unfair to dub him ‘God’s rottweiler’, but the fact that anyone even thought of calling him that leads one to wonder. There is, as they say, no white smoke without fire.
