Books

Here’s a selection of what I’ve written (some of which are out of print). You can find loads more – including books for children written with my wife Claire – in the Old Rope Bookstore.

The One Stop Bible Atlas

A highly inventive, user-friendly Atlas, with lively and entertaining commentary, and peppered with little-known facts. Nick Page applies the features of contemporary mapping styles to journeys and locations: logging Paul’s journeys on a Roman Road map complete with distance chart; linking Biblical sites to the panorama of Jerusalem today with 3D relief mapping; and locating the latest archaeological and historical research findings, Google-earth style. This truly innovative Bible Atlas will help readers visualise the journeys, events and locations and will bring the Bible to life in an entirely new way.

The Longest Week

From Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem on the Sunday, to his resurrection a week later; this book explores the claims and explode the myths. It looks seriously at the evidence of the gospel accounts, without ducking the controversies and contradictions. It focuses on the history rather than the spiritual and theological significance of events and uses archaeological research and detailed Biblical analysis to take the reader through the last week of Jesus’ life.

‘This is a book written by a highly experienced, technically brilliant and detailed writer.’

THE BIBLE BOOK – NEW AND REVISED

Now with over thirty new maps and hundreds of new features (well, maybe not hundreds, but there are a lot) this is a book that will help you explore the most famous book in the world. Informal but informed, simple, but never simplistic, The Bible Book tackles the Bible with honesty, humour and inventiveness. This book won’t baffle you with jargon, but it won’t insult your intelligence either. And it contains the life of Jesus as a tube map. What more do you want?

Explorers Notes CoverEXPLORER’S NOTES: THE BIBLE
I wrote this as a handy, pocket-sized guide to the Bible (providing you have fairly big pockets). It uses loads of graphics and what I hope is innovative design and manages to pack in a lot of information on the key people, places and events of the Bible. If you’re travelling, or if you just don’t want to pick up a really hefty tome, this book is for you. There are something like 150 reading plans, loads of innovative, informative maps (like the road map of Roman Palestine, which shows the distances between the towns) and tons of photos and diagrams. You can [see some sample pages here->http://www.nickpage.co.uk/explorers/index.html]. They’re low-res jpegs but they give you an idea of the layout, I hope.

AND NOW LET’S MOVE INTO A TIME OF NONSENSE
I wrote this out of sheer frustration with the quality of the words we sing in church. The book argues that we have bought into a pop-song model of worship songs, where the words are secondary to beat and melody. The result is songs which are filled with a strange semi-Biblical code and which suffer from poor technique. Above all it encourages writers to really think about the words of their songs and whether they really communicate truth about God.
“Every worship leader, worship planner and Christian songwqriter ought to read this book. It’ll make you laugh and wince, but most importantly inspire you to think intelligently and creatively about our worship culture.” Graham Kendrick

From Genesis to Revelation, hear the news from The Scroll – the only paper that was there.

CHURCH INVISIBLE
In The Church Invisible we are taken 40 years into the future, to a world where virtual reality is a lifestyle and technology exalts convenience at the cost of personal dignity. This book confronts some of the difficult questions: Why has the church disappeared? Can we do anything to change?
This inventive, engaging and provocative book will challenge the church in this country and worldwide to change. ‘It’s not enough to talk about the good news. We have to be the good news.’

REALITY BYTES
A journey into the heart of youthwork, armed with only enthusiasm, hope and a packet of chocolate biscuits. This book collects together the long-running series I wrote for Youthwork magazine and tells the tale of Chris, the new youthworker at Briglimpton Tabernacle and all the people he has to deal with, inlcuding Julian, the trainee martyr, Glenda the eco-warrior and Stanley, the caretaker who thinks that young people are some sort of disease.

STREET LIFE
A funny, thought-provoking, God-revealing look at the real issues of 21st-century lives. If it’s on the street, it’s in here – everything from chewing gum to mobile phones, traffic lights to trees, sex shops to scaffolding. All the things around us and all the ways in which we can use those sights to explore the Kingdom of God. Ideal for individual Bible study, youth groups, and house groups, street life is about going deeper than just reading the stories and actually creating a different lifestyle. It’s about making the words count.

50 DRAMA SKETCHES FOR YOUTH
A collection of the best of the sketches I’ve written for Youthwork magazine over the past seven years. The sketches are mainly designed to be ‘discussion starters’, focusing on a particular ethical or moral issues, and have been widely used for youthgroups, church services, etc.
They’re also designed to be very easy to perform, using the minimum of staging and costume.

LORD MINIMUS
The true story of Jeffrey Hudson, Britain’s smallest man.For a man of such diminutive stature, Hudson lived life on a grand scale. From the lowest social strata he rose to the courts of Kings and Queens. His portrait was painted by Van Dyck and Ben Jonson cast him in one of his masques. He was the subject of poems, prints and books. He fought in the civil war, was captured by pirates (twice), fought in a duel, and even spent 25 years in slavery in North Africa. Yet he died alone and forgotten, a relic of a society which no longer cared and which had moved onto the next object of fashion. Now, for the first time, Lord Minimus tells his story. It is a story of splendour and riches; of piracy and slavery; of war, treachery, intrigue and death. Above all, it is the true story of a man who lost every comfort he had, but retained his dignity, humanity and hope. More links and pictures of Jeffrey Hudson

There are many writers whose works inspire and lift us, who move us to tears with their beauty, elegance and profundity. This book is not about them.
No, this book is a celebration of bad writing; a journey into the lives of writers so wonderfully awful they have unwittingly arrived at genius from the other direction. Find out more at the dedicated website.
